Detailing High-Performance Facades: Cladding Decisions and Sealant Strategies

Today’s high-performance facade standards require the deft balancing of aesthetics, technical detailing, and the demands of the client and local building regulations. This workshop will discuss both material and technical solutions to meet those standards. Experts will be on hand to lead tutorials on the most recent innovations in rainscreen cladding, sealant solutions, and much more. Attendees will leave with a greater knowledge of material applications at the cutting-edge of energy performance and code compliance, all while learning of attractive solutions for clients and end users.

This course is designed to expand your understanding of basic aluminum glazing systems, specifically storefront, window wall, and curtain wall systems. After completing this course, you will be able to effectively select the appropriate aluminum glazing system for your project to achieve the desired aesthetics while providing optimal performance.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the different types of high-performance glass that are available and explain how these products impact occupant health, safety, and sustainability.
  • Investigate the design potential and innovative opportunities to reduce bird strikes, improve sound attenuation, reduce fire risk, and improve surface cleanliness using advanced glass technologies.
  • Explain how window retrofit technologies and power generating/dynamic glazing contribute to green and sustainable design in buildings.
  • Acquire insights into emerging technologies being used to achieve healthier, safer, and more sustainable buildings, beyond achieving performance and aesthetic targets.

This workshop aims to focus on utilizing high efficiency façade anchor systems and revolutionizing building envelopes from a design and practical viewpoint. By reviewing façade anchor system product development and installation conditions, key challenges and solutions will be explored. Real-life examples will also be used to deepen the understanding of utilizing energy efficient façade anchor systems, which could help with making better decisions by designers and builders.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the advantages of an envelope focused building approach
  • Insight into our approach in creating a high-performance façade anchor system
  • Understanding the effective U-value variation between different façade anchor system installations
  • How to manage challenging façade anchor installation conditions to obtain a highly efficient building envelope

Concrete slabs and steel beams that project through the building envelope, such as those used in balconies, canopies and parapets, break the insulation layer and create thermal bridging. Incorporating a thermal break significantly improves the thermal performance of building envelopes and helps avoid costly issues down the road. This course addresses thermal bridging solutions, as well as design best practices and local building code requirements related to structural thermal breaks.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how, why and where thermal bridging occurs
  • Identify the three main problems caused by thermal bridging
  • Discuss the pros and cons of different approaches to addressing the problem
  • Know how, when and why to use structural thermal breaks, including local code compliance
