The precise intersection of public space and people lies in public furniture. Each piece, whether a transit shelter, park bench, or plaza table, is designed to serve people in the public realm, and ideally, to include every citizen. This course broadens the conversation around inclusivity, not as an abstract concept, but as a lived reality shaped by the decisions designers make. By examining the role of public furniture in the social and spatial fabric of cities, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how design can foster equitable, welcoming, and human-centered spaces for all.
Learning Objectives
- Define inclusivity and distinguish it from related concepts such as inclusion and inclusive design.
- Explain the historical and contemporary relevance of inclusivity in public space design, with a particular emphasis on the legacy of ADA and the growing recognition of cultural and identity diversity.
- Identify current best practices in public engagement and how they inform inclusive design processes for both public and private projects.
- Develop actionable steps and begin to formulate a personal methodology for advancing nondiscriminatory, equity-centered design in public spaces.
